Divide and conquer

In this episode, I wrap up the final construction and joinery details of the casework in preparation for glue up. I had a key decision to make with regard to the final layout of the drawers. During the design phase, I had the top two drawer bays getting two drawers, while the bottom two had single drawers. However, this is a great case of where seeing the actual dry assembly can change your mind on a design detail. Of course I would have caught this had I built a prototype for this piece, but I knew I would have ample opportunity to make design changes at several points during this project. But after this episode, you’ll have a rough sense of what the final product will look like. And you may also have a new appreciation for cargo shorts!

Great video. I really enjoyed how you showed the method for creating the sliding dovetails insets to divide the drawers up like that. helped me understand a new technique. Thanks, keep it up!

Rob, now that was fun to watch.. I think I will start wearing my cargo shorts in my shop too. Now, start building those drawers.

As you might expect, my video production is typically a few weeks behind my actual project construction. Not to give too much away, but I just finished cutting all the dovetail joinery for the drawers on Sunday. Needless to say, 7 drawers (most of them different widths, heights, and depths) would be very difficult to manage with a dovetail jig, so I did hand cut them all. If nothing else, I should be well equipped for the hand tool olympics at Woodworking in America in a few weeks!

Nicely done, Rob. That's going to be one nice cabinet.
